Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall – Confucius
Outplacement is simply the release of a staff member from the company’s employment.
The reason might be that a role has become surplus to current or future business requirements or a staff member may need to be terminated for performance-related reasons.
Whatever the reason, you as an HR executive need to get involved to ensure that the reputation of your company as well as the dignity of the employee are maintained to the maximum degree possible.
Your involvement will ordinarily start in the assessment phase of whether or not a particular employee should be retrenched and the story behind it. Your involvement might come much later – sometimes much too late, but regardless of when your involvement starts, there are many things to consider.
This is never a fun part of your job, yet it must be handled with considerable tact, discretion and professionalism. All your experience and skills will be called upon.
We can assist you with all aspects of the process.
As an executive involved with outplacement, do you relate to any of these?
·
· Our company is being taken over
·
· We need to downsize
· I have never had to handle something like this before
· One of the staff managers is having trouble letting his loyal staff go
· I have a departmental manager who just wants to get rid of someone ASAP and has no concern for the company’s reputation
· We just cannot continue with the same staff level as before
· Linda is just not a team player, she has to go
· We are simply over-staffed for the work we have at the moment
· There are rumours about what’s happening to our company and our best people are already jumping ship
· I am being asked to let Dan go, but I don’t know exactly what to do
· We are merging with a competitor and there will be lay-offs
· Michelle is going to make things difficult if we let her go, but we need to do it
· The danger of not communicating professionally to the staff early is that all our best people might leave and only the worst performers will stay
· This is a confidential issue and there is nobody I can talk to or confide in
· I already feel frustrated, like I am torn in a dozen directions at once, and now this is on my plate
· I feel like I am the only one in the world with these issues
· People will think I can’t cope if I engage an Outplacement consultant
|

Even if you are a seasoned HR professional, outplacement is usually a one-off exercise and you may not have had huge experience. As a result, major mistakes can be made. |
Through our Outplacement services, you will:
· Discover that there is a methodology to cover the entire process
· There are checklists to ensure nothing major is overlooked
· This is a business (not just an HR) issue, and should be treated as such
· Like other business issues, this one should have a full business review
· Be provided with tools to:
§ Preserve your company’s reputation as a good employer
§ Convince the affected staff that they will be given resources to allow them to pursue their future with hope, thus allowing them to exit with dignity and not to bad-mouth the company
§ Be able to effectively manage those left behind
§ Turn a negative event into a positive one
What can you expect?
· Complete business assessment and framework for handling the whole process
· Advice, recommendations and participation at each stage
· Complete career planning process for affected staff
· Certified and/or experienced career coaches
· Forward momentum in total confidence and with complete discretion.
What should you NOT expect?
· Magic wand to solve all problems (yes, some people actually expect this!)
· Our coach to do all the work … you will need to take the lead
· A single session to get the results you need – it is a process and takes time
· Free professional consulting or cheap gimmicks
· High costs to get results – we will get results as quickly and as cost-effectively as you can accept them
What can the affected employees expect?
· Emotional support to overcome the potential damage to self-esteem etc
· A thorough review of where they stand including a financial review
· Complete and professional career planning program
· All our resources at their disposal including a copy of “Do What You Love, Love What You Do”.
· Turn procrastination into motivation and threats into opportunities
What should the affected staff NOT expect?
· Magic wand to solve all their problems or our coach to do all the work … they will need to take the lead
· Guarantees about finding new employment or starting in another position elsewhere within say 90 days or at all. The process will take time and perhaps a very long time, especially for more senior executives
· To pursue only those opportunities in familiar fields of previous employment – many new fields will be explored also
· The pain to last a long time. We have experienced practitioners to manage the emotional fall-out, if any
· Free additional coaching or cheap gimmicks
You will also discover that:
· Mistakes in this process can prove very costly, not just in reputation but also in dollar terms
· Larger outplacement companies can be less cost-effective than we are
How does it work?
· You make a decision that outplacement looks like it is becoming likely
· You contact us to review your desired outplacement outcomes
· We mutually agree on a way forward
· We commence the outplacement program
· Your business problems reduce and your life improves
All our outplacement services are conducted with complete confidentiality.

From the desk of Peter Fleming: In the course of networking, as I do almost every day, I come across a number of business opportunities in a number of industries with different business and marketing models, different risk profiles and different levels of investment. |
|
Many such opportunities are interesting. Some are very interesting. I get involved in some that fit with my mission and values and I do not get involved in many others, even though they may be reasonably attractive. This is because obviously I can’t get involved in everything and/or maybe because it’s a poor fit for me personally.
While such opportunities are not always for everyone, just as several are not for me, some may be interesting to you and I will be pleased to hook you up with the principals and agents who are involved.
At any given time these opportunities include:
· On-line Education
· Telecommunications
· Nutritional Products
· Training
· Air purifiers
· Health Supplements
· IT
· Business Development
· Exotic Aromatherapy
· Health Tonics
· Investments
Some of these are truly global opportunities; some are local to

If a man advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavours to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with success unexpected in common hours - Henry David Thoreau
· Coaching is far from new, yet often there is confusion about what it is ... and what it is not.
· Think of sports. Coaching has been used in Sports and other fields of peak performance for many years but has only recently started to show up in business and life.
· In Sport, there is a strong culture of results and improvement, and so it should be in our personal life, business, career, health, relationships etc.
· It is a relationship between a Coach and a client that is confidential and focused exclusively on improving the client’s results
· It is a profession, an art and a science all rolled into one.
One key thing to note is that Life Coaching, like Sports Coaching,
is focused on just one thing: Improving Your Results.
The roller coaster ride of change these days has shattered the traditional organizational hierarchies. The result of which are self-directed work teams, increased spans of control with the need to do more with less. Coaching helps to build a new foundation with employees – one that is based on self-responsibility and self-accountability.
Organizations hire external coaches for Results - to improve performance, alignment, mission integration, as a Catalyst for Change and for Leadership Development. Coaches help organizations maintain focus on what will make them most successful.
Coaching works for several reasons:
· Synergy between the coach and coachee creates momentum.
· Better defined goals support a coachee to move toward those goals faster and effortlessly..
· Coachees develop new skills, and these skills translate into more success.
Coaching is an effective way to assist leaders and managers to attain, and even exceed their goals. A recent survey done in the U.S measured the Return on Investment (ROI) of 100 managers and executives of Fortune 1000 companies who received customized Executive Coaching. The survey found the coaching to return an average of six times the cost of the coaching program.
Among the specific benefits to organizations that provide coaching to their managers and executives are improvements in:
· Leadership effectiveness
· Organizational strength
· Retaining executives who receive coaching
· Top-line sales
· Bottom-line profitability
· Overall Productivity
· Quality of products and service
· Cost reductions
· Most people want more. To be, to have and to do more. They want to expand and indeed our personal growth is our natural essence, the normal way of things.
· However, few people have Specific Goals about what they want to be, to have or to do. Until the step of defining goals is taken, most effort by most people turns out to be simply a waste.
· They should be set and written down. A famous study, tracking graduates from a top
· These goals need to be specific. “I want to be happy, rich, famous etc” is way too vague. Goals also need to be clearly described, written down and reviewed often.
· At PFI, we have developed a methodology based on the best of the best thinking in this field called FIRST ACT. Goal-setting is indeed the first act to making any improvement in business, finance, health or anything else.
· Whilst most professional Coaching has structure, guidelines and methodologies, getting more effective results in your life will ultimately come from you (along with your Coach) having a deep “Toolbag”.
· Said simply, this toolbag is the number of options you have to enable you to effectively advance in the direction of your goals and to address any potential obstacles on the way.
· Most of us face some obstacles in some areas of our lives and the reason we often do not get past them is that our own toolbag is simply too shallow. We just don’t have all the resources we need.
· We advance (if we advance at all) and respond to challenges with the view that there is a single option and we pursue that solution. This sometimes works but often does not. There is always more than one option and a Coach will assist to uncover as many as possible.
· Effective Coaching therefore deepens your toolbag by expanding the number of alternatives and extending the number of Options that you have.
· Unresolved challenges put us in a “Stuck” state leading to procrastination, hopelessness, depression and eventually to desperation.
· In order to get “Unstuck”, something has to change. If past mistakes are to be avoided, patterns must be identified and broken. These patterns are our conditioning. Research has shown that we are 90% of “who we are” (i.e. our conditioned self) by the age of 14. This is scary, but most people can identify with its truth. Many of our most treasured values and beliefs about the world, people, money, health, God, work and so forth were probably taught to us well before we were old enough to vote and they have not changed much since. These values and beliefs have served us well on occasions but sometimes they have not.
· The main thing to ask yourself is not whether these values and beliefs are “right” or “wrong”. There are few, if any, absolutes.
The key question to ask yourself is whether your views on life (values & beliefs) are getting you closer to your goal or further away from it.
· You may want more wealth yet somewhere in your subconscious mind, you believe that money is the root of all evil – probably something you overheard as a child or something your parents truly believed.
· The question is not: “Is money evil?” The question is: is this attitude going to serve me well in pursuing wealth? If the answer is no, then you need to acknowledge that something has to change for you to achieve the outcome you want.
Adaptable Attitudes are critical especially in today’s world of rapid change.
Getting the results you want can be tough if you are going through the experience alone and that’s where a Coach comes in. Whether it’s Life, Executive, Business or Career Coaching, our clients tell us that improvements are exceptional and delightful.
The principal thing that matters to us is
Improving Your Results.

Give me a stock clerk with a goal and I'll give you a man who will make history. Give me a man with no goals and I'll give you a stock clerk. - J.C. Penney
All human progress can be traced back to a single human being having a dream, turning that dream into a series of executable goals and pursuing those goals until the dream is fulfilled through determination and perseverance even when all the indications were that it couldn’t be done.
If someone somewhere somehow had not had a dream and then followed that dream to fulfilment, there would be no aeroplanes, no TV, no automobiles, no MP3-players, no penicillin, no Internet, indeed no progress of any kind. And so it is with us as individuals.
To make any significant progress in business or in life first requires a Dream. The Dream should be backed up with a series of executable Goals and an unshakable belief that the Dream can become Reality if it is pursued by taking consistent and appropriate Actions on a daily basis.
So the FIRST ACT in making significant progress then, is dreaming. Fantasising.
Thinking of results well beyond today’s reality and expectations.
Not looking at today and aiming at a comfortable level of incremental improvement.
But looking well beyond today at an uncomfortable level of material improvement.
You see what exists and ask Why? I see what does not yet exist and ask Why Not? – George Bernard Shaw
This is the FANTASY phase. At first, it will seem out of reach. It’s outrageous and we’d be out of our mind to adopt this as our goal. But before ruling it out, let’s just play with it for a moment.
If there is ANY WAY AT ALL for that fantasy to become a reality, any way at all, even if it means extraordinary conditions to be fulfilled, extraordinary sacrifices to be made with the end results being way beyond current levels or beyond any reasonable expectations, but IF IT IS AT ALL POSSIBLE IN ANY WAY, and you can see that way to do it in your mind, then that becomes your THEORY. There will be many if’s and but’s at this stage but never mind … stick with the path and plan your theory of achieving your fantasy.
The final stage is translating your theory into Daily Actions and ultimately into REALITY.
So your path is clear and simple:
(1) your FANTASY à (2) your THEORY à (3) your REALITY.
What the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve – Napoleon Hill
The bridges between these 3 stages are the goals you set and then proceed to execute. We have developed some powerful resources to enable your advancement along this path.
Much has been said and written about this topic and there is overwhelming evidence that setting goals will improve performance, but what is the
Most businesses and individuals set goals (if they set them at all) using a methodology called “SMART”, which says that to be effective a goal should be:
· Specific – must not be vague or ambiguous – the more detailed the better
· Measurable – must be able to measure before and after … and therefore the improvement
· Achievable – must not be impossible
· Realistic – must be attainable with the resources allocated within the timeframe set
· Time-bound – must have a delivery date
This has been the guideline for businesses and individuals for a long time now and these do indeed provide a simple, easy-to-remember framework for teachers and students alike and this simple model is certainly better than nothing.
However, this simplistic “SMART” model also explains why businesses and individuals tend to consistently under-achieve and live rather stressful lives without fulfilling their potential and often out of balance.
Several critical dimensions are missing which, if present, can transform results well beyond present levels.
A much improved model for effective goal setting (and goal achievement) is
“
Just like SMART, each letter stands for a key word in the process.
Among other things, part of this model examines our fundamental priorities in life and to what extent our business/career is aligned to those priorities, so we can begin to live our lives in greater balance.

From Workshops Sponsors:
| To Whom It May Concern: Peter Fleming facilitated a series of personal change management workshops for our operations in Peter's facilitation style allowed him to connect with people naturally and provided a safe conducive environment for willing participation and sharing of experiences. His sensitivity to the situation and people from different cultural backgrounds and organisation levels contributed much to the success of these workshops. Consistent feedback with comments such as "inspiring", "motivating", "enlightening" and "relevant use of tools" was received across the four operations. The vast majority indicated they were more confident in facing the future. I would like to thank Peter for the great job in meeting our objectives and providing such an enlightening learning experience. | Dear Mr. Fleming COACHING FOR SALES SUPERVISORS I refer to the two workshops conducted by you for our sales supervisors recently on October 26 and November 2. I have received feedback from the participants, which has been very positive. Our sales supervisors have indicated in our evaluation survey that there was an increase of 88% in their knowledge of the subject, compared to before they attended the respective workshops. The overall assessment by the 50 participants is 83%. Among the many positive comments received, I would say the content of the workshops were structured very well. The informative and interactive way in which you conducted the workshops made it fun and a good learning experience for the participants. More importantly, our participants found the workshops beneficial, meaningful and directly relevant to the sales supervisors' responsibility in coaching their insurance advisers for peak performance. Many of the participants have indicated that the workshops will help them to become better sales coaches, improve their understanding of the science of coaching as well as give them the opportunity to know their insurance advisers better in the course of coaching them. In view of the feedback provided by the participants and the excellent evaluation of the workshops, we may consider more workshops/training courses in the future. I hope we will have a chance to work together again, to further improve the quality of our sales supervisors through continuous professional development. Thank you for the part you played in conducting these workshops. Warmest regards Tan Li Leng NTUC Income |

Peter, thank you for the seminar, it was both enlightening and informative. Many times people are unwilling to take a hard look at themselves to improve themselves. I found with your system it was painless but very effective at recognizing needs and giving solutions. Now as you said the rest is up to me, so thank you for the guidance, it is appreciated.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for the workshop man I really needed that, not that this was the first time, but I never had really set my goal for my business so far. So now I have it and I want to go for it 150%.
My other goal is to make my talk really good so people will know what to do to lose weight or manage their problems.
Yours in Health and Wellness

Hi Peter,
Thanks so much for availing the workshop to us....both Kerry and myself benefited so much from it. We actually did a review on what we learnt on Saturday and related to each other how we can effectively apply what we have learnt and experienced from the workshop! I took reference from the Self-Assessment Summary and directed Kerry to use it for herself in helping herself to recognize her strengths and applying it to this business.
The workshop not only helped us to identify ourselves in relation to our work, it also created self awareness (which is one important pre-requisite of positive change). The opportunity of discussion in different groups was very interesting and helpful. It not only got everyone to verbalize how they felt, it got us out of our comfort zone! Normally when people attend workshops, most would just sit back and be a sponge throughout the whole day.
Instead, you made us mingle and interact. This basically is a fundamental in starting any business.....getting out of one's comfort zone and knowing what's happening to the world and thus realizing how we can position our business strategically.
I'm very glad that Kerry and I spent a very fruitful Saturday attending your workshop. We look forward to more fantastic workshops of yours!!
Cheers,
How Seng

Conference Development Manager,
From Executive and Career Coaching Clients:
Dear Peter,
I am on my way to starting a new career with renewed confidence in myself, clarity of my goals and a commitment to self-improvement in order to achieve these goals.
This is thanks to the career coaching, guidance and counseling I received from you in the intensive sessions we had back in January and February.
The whole exercise using a structured process required an intensive introspection and brutal acceptance of one’s shortcomings but it also highlighted clearly the strengths and the value of one’s experience. It brought out the areas of interest and passion which then allowed me to pursue a career change in a proactive and focused manner.
The biggest gain for me was a renewed vigour and confidence to embark on the next 15 years of my life.
You were tough but it was necessary. You were patient and empathetic which made it easier for me to share my experiences and get your feedback and perspective.
I am grateful for the role you played. Thank you very much for this.
I am sure you will help many more people improve their lives and I wish you all the best. Till we meet again.
Yours sincerely
Gautam Gulati

How long would a Peak Performance Workshop last?
Our program would be 2 days. We have found results improve significantly when there is a follow-up day about 21-30 days later, for a total of 3 days.
What differentiates PFI from the rest in the consulting, training and coaching world?
We believe we are different in several important ways:
· Collaborating through a Network of Associates ensures that the appropriate skills and experience are applied to the engagement – no more, no less.
· There is flexibility in our engagement model, including fees. Our experience is that applying rigid methodologies/models will often generate sub-optimal solutions.
· In consulting engagements, our solutions are customised to add the most possible value. We do not generate solutions and then go looking for a problem to solve.
· We can scale from very small to relatively large engagements with equal quality assurance.
· We do development and deployment WITH clients; not TO them
What is the general engagement model for PFI services?
Typically, PFI will conduct initial discussions with clients to assist in designing the scope and major elements of a potential engagement. Based on these discussions, a proposal will be offered and upon acceptance by the client, the engagement will begin. PFI assumes full and direct responsibility for the successful conclusion of the engagement and will manage all deliverables – regardless of the associate partners involved - assuring clients that there is always a single point of accountability.
What about your training and coaching services?
Training and Personal Coaching are major elements of our offerings.
· Training – we offer general and customized training to groups on many topics including peak performance, team-building, presentation skills etc. This can be anything from 2-3 hours up to 2-3 days depending on the scope.
· Coaching – we offer coaching in the area of life success, personal goal-setting, career counseling, behavioural change etc. This is delivered 1-on-1 or in small groups, either over a period of time (e.g. 6 two-hour sessions) or in "workshop" format (e.g. 2 full days).
How can I get to know more about PFI?
We can arrange a no-obligation discussion at your convenience. If your organisation needs a speaker, a panelist, an independent expert, please feel free to Email us
